The People’s Party stands with Palestinians and against the recent aggression on Palestine at the hands of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Israel is illegally evicting Palestinian families in east Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, an occupied portion of the city where it has no jurisdiction under international law. In response to widespread protest of the evictions, Israeli police attacked protesters and worshipers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque this week, the third holiest site in Islam, storming the building with tear gas and stun grenades during the month of Ramadan.
As an occupied people on their homeland, Palestinians have a right to defend themselves against the occupying forces that aid in the blatant theft of their lands and that keep millions contained in what is often called an open air prison.
On Tuesday Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “We will continue the attack on Gaza with full force. Supporters of Hamas and Islamic Jihad will pay a high price for their actions, they will pay with their lives.”
Only weeks ago, prior to the unthinkable aggression of the last few days, Human Rights Watch (HRW) accused Israel of committing “crimes against humanity” in a lengthy report on Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. HRW also accused the United States of turning “a blind eye” on the ethnic cleansing. In fact, the U.S. has twice this week blocked a statement on the situation from the UN Security Council. According to reports, 14 out of 15 member countries supported the statement with only the U.S. opposing.
The U.S. supports Israel in the form of $3.8 billion in military aid per year, funded by taxpayer money. The People’s Party demands that the U.S. immediately stop funding apartheid and war crimes in Palestine. We also demand that President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken use all diplomatic means at their disposal to pressure Israel to end the attack on Palestine and the decades-long occupation and ethnic cleansing.
Israel rejected a ceasefire offer from Hamas on Wednesday and is preparing for a ground invasion as of Thursday. The People’s Party calls on Israel to enter into a ceasefire and stop the senseless loss of lives immediately.
Israeli forces on Saturday targeted a high rise building that housed media offices including those belonging to The Associated Press and Al Jazeera. The building also contained many residential units. Shortly before the building was leveled, in response to a warning by Israeli forces, the building’s owner pleaded with Israeli forces to allow ten additional minutes for media personnel to retrieve their gear. The plea was denied and the building was ultimately destroyed, an action that fits a years-long pattern of targeting both local and international media.
Recent reports indicate that at least 139 people have been killed in Gaza including 39 children. Seven people, including one child, have been killed in Israel by rocket fire from Gaza.
The People’s Party encourages our members to stand with Palestine and demand the full recognition of Palestinian human rights by Israel, the U.S., and the international community. The tides are turning and Israel can no longer engage in this brutal occupation without recourse. Over a hundred years after the Balfour Declaration was made, even The Guardian says its support of the statement recognizing a national home for Jews in the inhabited land of Palestine was one of the outlet’s “worse errors of judgment.”
