The case for a People’s Party

Polls show that the large majority of Americans are progressive and almost two out of three Americans are now calling for a major new party. The number is even greater among young people and poor people.

Why? We want what regular people take for granted in so many other countries: single payer health care, free public college, money out of politics, an infrastructure jobs program, a $15 minimum wage, financial regulations, and more. We deserve these good things. If other countries can deliver these things, we know the richest nation on earth can too.

What’s in the way is not our ability, it’s the oligarchs who are making so much money and building so much power from the current system. They don’t want things to change. The money has corrupted both major parties. The oligarchs have, as writer Teodrose Fikre put it, “turned America into a nation of Aspen for the rich and Appalachia for the poor and working class.”

We deserve true representation

Corrupt political parties cannot be salvaged

A majority of people in the US now don’t feel represented by either the Democratic or Republican parties. We’ve watched these parties turn their backs on us — as money counts more than votes — so huge numbers have left the establishment parties and concluded they cannot be salvaged.

Our major political parties do not operate democratically. They are private corporations and think they have no accountability to the will of the people, as the Democrats openly admitted in court. Their leaders are chosen by their own corrupt peers. Getting one or two real progressives elected within the Democratic Party won’t change Party policies any more than thinking one union-minded Walmart manager will change the policies of Walmart.

Together, we win

The country is beyond ready for a new nationally-viable progressive party. But our movement has been divided into hundreds of organizations working independently of one another. Together, when progressives, independents, and labor come together, we do have the power, the resources, and the support to create the nationally viable alternative to the Democrats and Republicans that two-thirds of Americans are clamoring for.

Supplanting the establishment parties will take a broad alliance of working people. That’s why we’re building a coalition of unions, community groups, student chapters, academics, progressive parties and forward-thinking organizations to launch a new people’s party.

If Americans don’t find a genuinely anti-establishment home on the left, people furious with the system will continue to rush to the only populism they see: Trump’s brand of xenophobic, authoritarian, and militaristic populism; just as they did in the 2016 election. It is of the utmost importance that progressives launch a populist party before we go further down this path. We must do it now, while the opportunity to carry the revolution to forge a better life for ALL of us is still open.

Let’s make history

Our intrepid field leaders and volunteers are approaching groups across the country and discussing the coalition with them. They are emissaries of the coalition, and one conversation at a time we are bringing groups together for the party that will complete the political revolution and usher in a twenty-first century truly democratic progressive era. Let’s make history!
