Here’s what isn’t Being Said on the Debate on Guns

Thirty-one sisters and brothers, mothers and fathers, friends and neighbors were brutally taken from us this weekend in mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. A week earlier, three people were killed and 13 injured when a gunman opened fire at a Garlic Festival in California.

In Texas a white supremacist was goaded into murderous violence by a Racist-in-Chief who dehumanizes people of color as animals and vermin. The killer drove nine hours to open fire in a Latino community on the border with Mexico. Yesterday, while the community was grieving, and in the midst of Trump’s visit to El Paso, he doubled down on his racism with the largest ICE raid in a decade, ripping 680 Latinos immigrants from their children.

A hundred people are killed by gun violence in America every single day. The U.S. is the only country in the world with more guns than people; coming in a distant second is war-torn Yemen. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that the U.S. homicide rate is seven times higher than in other wealthy countries, and that guns are involved in 73 percent of the killings. The problem is so bad that Amnesty International issued an unprecedented global travel advisory citing racist massacres and rampant gun violence in America.

Since the shootings, Democrats and Republicans have taken their partisan positions to enact a morbid ritual of empty prayers and craven posturing. The Democrats blame Republicans and their subservience to the National Rifle Association, as if Republicans are the only thing standing in the way of the gun regulations that the large majority of Americans want to see.

What the pundits and the Democrats aren’t telling you is that extreme levels of gun violence have plagued our country for decades and the Democrats have been railing for tighter gun laws for just as long. But every time they find themselves in control of Congress and the White House, they show their true colors and cower to the NRA.

In the 1990’s the Democrats faced public pressure to ban assault weapons. But when voters gave them full control over Congress and the White House, they passed a temporary ban instead of a permanent one, ensuring that gun massacres would resume.

Then in the 2000’s, the Democrats campaigned on tackling gun violence again. But after voters gave them full majorities once more, they reneged again in a betrayal so shocking that the Brady Campaign called Obama an “abject failure” and gave him an “F” on preventing gun violence.

Just like they had before, the Democrats only rediscovered their righteous indignation for gun victims after they had lost their majorities in Congress and campaign season came back around. The truth is that the Democrats have a well-rehearsed routine. They use gun violence when it suits their election prospects, just like they do with single payer.

Every death that follows is blood on the hands of the corrupt and cowardly politicians who stoke hate and refuse to stem the flood of firearms while the people they claim to represent are massacred in their communities.

The People’s Party will end this carnage once and for all.

Join the team of volunteers across the country that is building a party that will never be beholden to the corporations that are killing the innocent and putting us all in harm’s way.
